What happned
SOme 80,000 people migrated to america in the 1920' s
-Emergency quota act of 1921: temprorary act that limited the number of european immagrants to the united states in anyGiven year, cut by 10%
-Literacy tests were used as an attepmt to keep immigration under control
-so members of Congress sought a new way to restrict immigration
in the 1920s, introducing Quotas
-From 1924- 1927 a new policy was enstated, the Immigration ACT OF 1924 Act set the annual quota
of any nationality at 2% of the number of people living in the United Sates with the same
nationality
-That revised formula reduced total immigration from 357,803 in 1923–24 to 164,667 in 1924–25.
-Southern Eurpoeans were infuriated by the limitation of immigration from their countries
-Japanese immigrants also were angered by the Immigration act of 1924: banning immigration from Japan

EFFECTS:
-marked the end of unrestricted immigration to the United States
-Immigration laws effected every overseas country differently, decreasing Immigration from Great Britain and Ireland 19% compared to immigration from Italy that dropped more than90%, and even greater, japan being cut off from immigration completley
-eventhough immigration was minimized, the effects of the new arrivals were the formation of ethnic communities separated by nationality, that had trouble assimilating andunderstanding those of other nationalities
- Caused problems with labor because of vast ethnic differences, beliefs and practices
